The truth is that the criminal justice system doesn’t often offer crime victims real justice. In the first place, there might not be a conviction. Even if there is, the victim may be left to shoulder the burden of the trauma and financial costs of the crime.
Furthermore, there are often parties who were indirectly responsible for the crime who will never be prosecuted in a criminal court. A hotel or parking lot may have had inadequate security, for example, that made the crime possible. The criminal justice system won’t hold them to account.
